Palladium‐Catalyzed Decarboxylative 1,2‐Addition of Carboxylic Acids to Glyoxylic Acid Esters: A More Sustainable Approach to Mandelic Acids

The formation of C−C-bonds constitutes one the most fundamental synthetic operations in organic chemistry. nucleophilic addition preformed organometallic reagents to an electrophilic carbonyl functionality represents a classical method for selective construction C−C-bond. However, synthesis and utilization reagent is associated with unfavorable environmental profile. Herein, we disclose Palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative 1,2-addition carboxylic acids glyoxylic acid esters. This novel provides access mandelic scaffold good yields. Easy-to-handle readily available benzoic are utilized as more sustainable alternative nucleophiles.

A new protocol for Ru-catalyzed decarboxylative cyclization of mandelic acids with acrylates was established, which allows efficient construction of the phthalide skeleton.
